Anatomy of a ZomBOOsical

Part Two: Recording From Afar

Sadly, I live in a different place to John, Moe and Hilden. Very different, over 4,000 miles away different actually. I really wanted to keep an active involvement with the ZomBOOsical after heading home and we’d already tried musical collaboration over the internet before with the Shmopera and it worked surprisingly well.

So how does it work? Well more often than not I’d get a mail or something from Hilden with an mp3 of a rough track that they were working on with some vague ideas of what they need on the guitar and what bpm the track would be set to. As luck would have it, Hilden and I both use Logic Pro on the Mac so our process for recording and mixing is very similar, which made the process a little smoother. On top of the direct emails, I’d be chatting with John on a pretty much daily basis via Skype, MSN, Email and Facebook chat to keep up to date with what’s going on and input the occasional idea here and there.

My thought process for recording was to provide Hilden with as dry and raw a sound file as I could so that he could easily edit and mix later on to fit with the other things he had. This can be quite a difficult thing to achieve, you want to provide enough EQ to give direction to how you think it should sound but not enough that it limits or forces the mix in a particular direction. Electric guitar is also fun given that you’re generally talking about adding a truck load of different effects to get ‘that sound’ so another balance to hit for example was ‘how much delay and reverb’.

The way I approached these issues was to create a rough mix with all instruments included as a reference point to a) where my parts should be time-wise and b) a rough idea of how I’d mix it. That’s mainly where things sit in the stereo mix, how much effects I’d go with a rough EQ pass. Following that file I’d send each separate audio track with a small amount of EQ, minimal effects and no stereo mix.

One of the things that I wanted to make sure that I captured with the actual performances when recording was the ‘recorded on the spot with minimal thought process’ feel that we had from the first session. Thankfully, the way I approach recording guitar melody/lead work is to set the section I’m working on into a loop, hit record and improvise for a few runs. From there I’ll either find one of the performances that I already love or listen through them all and pick out the bits that I think worked and record what I call a Frankenstein Track, all the bits I like stitched together.

As a treat, here’s some of the guitar work that I did that didn’t make it into the final tracks…

I don’t remember a lot of things in this episode, which was recorded at 1am after a long night of working on the ZomBOOsical. Seriously, I was surprised as hell by what I heard while editing this thing down. I guess that’s not a good sign for what you’re about to hear. See? This is what happens when fine readers such as yourselves send us Vodka.

Oh, and drunken Hilden feels like he owes Jessica Chobot an apology after what is said in this episode. But then again, sober Hilden kind of agrees.

Thanks for listening!

Anatomy of a ZomBOOsical

Part One: Recording the First Tracks

I recently stayed in Minneapolis with John during the first couple of weeks of September. One of the first topics for discussion when I arrived was how much fun the Shmopera had been to record earlier in the year. Over an afternoon BBQ with a couple of pints, Moe and I joked away at the ridiculous lyrics and my very last minute inclusion of those guitar solos to the finale. Somewhere in the conversation, among some ideas for the next Shmopera, jokes about Russian Chorus and some bratwurst, the idea of a ZomBOOsical was mentioned.

What’s this? ZomBOOsical???

Of course the timing was great, we were planning to get some tracks down for release starting in October and we already had a month’s head start on what we’d usually pull out of the hat. In all honesty, there were no big concepts simply the idea that we’d do a Halloween album all about Zombies.

On the first day of recording, John and I headed out to pick up Moe before driving over to Hilden’s to record the week’s DGR. It was in the car that we started discussing our first ideas. We’d crammed some gear into the car, I don’t remember exactly what but Moe had the Sax ready to go on John’s request. The only idea we had at this point was that John had a drum beat in mind and the thought that Moe should play the most obnoxious Sax possible. I think the exact idea was – “play until you throw up.”

The ZomBOOsical is LIVE!

October 26th, 2009 by Hilden

It’s been a long labor of love with more than a little lost sleep but we’re proud to bring you the full ZomBOOsical! in all it’s Zombie glory!

With all the story bits added in, the ZomBOOsical! clocks in at a total of 30 tracks! With 17 of those being pure music tracks, you’ll have more tunes stuck in your head than you can handle this Halloween.

Also included in the ZomBOOsical! download is a very special episode of After Hours where we talk through the making of the work in as much detail as our drunken selves could handle. At any rate, you can hear how Moe came up with all those awesomely odd tunes!

We’ve also included a lyric sheet in case you want to sing along. You know, cause what else would you do with a musical?

To get to the ZomBOOsical!, you can click the big logo at the top of Robot Panic. We’re asking for a $10 donation to the site/show if for no other reason than to justify to our families why we’ve been barricaded up in my attic for days on end, screaming about a Zombie invasion.

We sincerely hope you enjoy the ZomBOOsical! and let us know what you think about it in the comments section!

Also, special thanks to my brother, the all mighty Justin Hilden, for creating that kick ass ZomBOOsical! logo! And another thanks to Phil Haymes for all his added awesomeness!
