Sunday SHOCK Theater!

September 29th, 2010 by Ryker XL

shock3This year, in a blatant attempt to get us all more involved in SHOCKtober (and hopefully scare the piss out of you) we are introducing the all NEW Sunday SHOCK Theater!

How does this thing work?  Well, that’s pretty easy.  Every Sunday evening, yours truly will be hosting a Netflix viewing party on Xbox Live where we can watch a spooky movie or short.  The get-together will begin at 7:00 CST with the movie beginning promptly at 7:15 PM.  If you are on my friends list, just look for me and join the party.  If you’re not, simply send a message and we will hook you up.  If the party gets full we can open up and host other rooms, or you can simply watch the show on your own.

The Friday before Sunday SHOCK Theater we will have an article posted on Robot Panic with an overview of the film.  Then after the viewing we can discuss the film right here on the board.  Comments about what happened during SHOCK Theater are perfectly acceptable.   Here’s the spooktacular line up:

October 3rd – Masters of Horror: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road – Voted one of the BEST episodes of this amazing horror series.

October 10th – Sugar Hill  – Think Black Dynamite…with Zombies.

October 17th – The Raven – A cult horror classic starring Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Peter Lorrie.

October 24th – The Vanishing – This is the original Swedish version of this tale.  Perhaps one of the most horrifying films of the 1980s, and one that will haunt you for quite some time.

So that’s this year’s line up.  So grab some popcorn, turn down the lights, and join us each Sunday in October for some scary good times!

Time to Posse Up

June 7th, 2010 by Ryker XL

RDR

Alright pardners (and Moe), I do believe that it is time for us to saddle up and hit the plains together in a DGR community playdate!  Let’s posse up as many of us as we can in a private server for some Red Dead Redemption Free Roam and Gang War action. The time I would like to propose for such a get together would be this coming Sunday eveing, June 13th, from 8:00 -10:00 CST.

Why Posse up?  Well after another great night of roaming the plains with Mitchi’s Outlaws, I was reminded about just how GREAT gaming has become since I virtually eliminated the D-bag factor.  Before joining the DGR and surrounding communities I would frequently find myself pulling my hair out (and trust me there isn’t much left these days) putting up with loud-mouthed kids or grievers who found great pleasure in ruining the online experience for us.  Those days are mostly gone, and while I do find myself getting into a public game every now and then, I vastly perfer gaming with the awesome people we have here, many of whom have become dear and good friends in real life.

We have a section with gamertags on the site, but with the influx of folks that have contributed lately, so it may not be a bad time to send the call out for folks to post their gamertags here and join in on the fun.  Hopefully PanicBot can then turn this information into a new up-to-date list of bad ass, drunk gamers!

I’ll start:

Xbox Live = Ryker XL

PSN = Ryker_XL

Steam = Ryker XL (Hey I see a pattern)

See you Sunday pardner!  Unless yer yella…

Insane in the Brain = Netflix Party!!!

September 30th, 2009 by Ryker XL

Insane in the Brain poster

Last night I eagerly logged into to Xbox Live in hopes of getting a Batman Arkham Asylum nightcap when I saw my good friends Skreesha and Phneri online and watching a movie I have never heard of.  I had dabbled with Netflix party, sharing quick 20 minute episodes of “Bullshit” before, but never an entire movie.  So, I sent a quick message to Skreesha asking what the heck they were watching.  Moments later I was invited to watch their movie in a party, with Moe joining soon after.  What followed was 80 minutes of movie fun that has to be one of the better times I have had on Xbox Live.

The movie we were watching was “Insane in the Brain.” At first one might think that it has something to do with the Cyprus Hill song of the same name; however nothing could be further from the truth.  “Insane in the Brain” is a spoof of both zombie movies and the “blaxploitation” films of the 70s.  For those unfamiliar with these films, they were known for their (mostly) all-black casts, over-the-top blatant sexuality, and bloody violence.  Movies such as “Superfly” and “Foxy Brown” featured tight, scanty outfits , tailored 70′s-style suits, big afros, sex, violence, drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes, and, let us not forget, the tricked-out “pimpmobiles.”  As popular as they were, they soon faded largely due to pressure by the NAACP.

It is this cultural icon that director Chad Hendricks pays homage to in this horror-comedy.  The movie opens as several zombies (four to be exact) rise from the grave proclaiming their need for “Brains, more brains.”  The zombies find a party at a pimp’s house and start killing hookers.  It’s then that we realize that these zombies aren’t looking for brains so much as they are looking for a good piece of ass.  As the hooker body count rises, two cops arrive in a black Cadillac to investigate.  Detectives Sloan and Goldie are dressed in iconic 70s garb including platform boots, and a big afro with a comb!  The detectives interrogate the hos and soon realize that they are dealing with a group of horny zombies.  After much consternation, and some beer and weed, they come up with a grand plan to eliminate the menace!  Detective Sloan leans a funky cheer as he, his partner, and a bunch of hos attack the graveyard.  Classic!

The film was produced for only $10,000; and you can tell by the way they recycle shots and re-use the zombie mask and gloves the monsters wear.  It was very cheesy, but unlike many bad movies, this one never takes itself seriously.  The dialogue is straight 70s and reminiscent of “Undercover Brother.”  The film provides a bucket full of laugh-out-loud moments that were only enhanced by the MST2K banter of our Netflix party.  All of us sat and tried to outdo one another with a witty comment about the dialogue or sparse sets.  In short, it was a simply awesome!

After the show we all sat and looked for other bad movies that we could enjoy such as “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus,” or “Tokyo Zombie.”  But alas, I fear that whatever we decide to watch next, it will pale in comparison to the experience provided by this film.  So with Halloween approaching, and our need to enjoy all things zombie, grab a friend or two online or in your living room and give “Insane in the Brain” a look.  It’s an experience you won’t soon forget.

Xbox Live: “You’re too good. You’re suspended!”

May 13th, 2009 by Ian (DJI)

So I’m all like, “Regan is watchin’ American Idol tonight. I reckon I’ll play me some Raiden.”

“I can’t let you do that, Ian” said the Xbox.

whut

Hahaha, um, a’ight.  I’ll go play outside.  Dat’s coo.

All they need to do now is reduce my gamerscore permanently to twelve and I’ll be a happy camper.

Oh, I didn’t call them or anything. I just thought it was funny shit. Also, I’m a decent fan of making outlandish claims. Maybe when I get to sign in today they’ll give me a warning message like, “You place high on too many leaderboards. OMG HAX STOP IT!!”

I’d like-…-take a picture of that.

My profile was probably offensive. Gaming is for children, doncha know. ;)

Left 4 Dead: Zombies Done Right

November 19th, 2008 by Hilden

Left 4 Dead, given to us by the good folks at Valve, may be one of the truest zombie games to come out in some time. For those not in the know, Left 4 Dead is a four player co-op battle of four survivors (you and three other online players) vs. a horde of undead zombies. The game is broken up into a variety of campaign style segments that play out over the course of 5 areas per campaign. Released for both PC and 360, the game features the use of the Source engine and folks accustomed to the feel of TF2′s first person shooter gameplay will be right at home.

We’re big zombie fans here at Robot Panic, as if you didn’t already know this. So we take our zombie stuff pretty seriously. As such, we applauded a game like Dead Rising for it’s adherence to George Romero’s zombie rules and setting far more than it’s gameplay. While it got the “killing zombies in a mall” idea down, the save system did it’s best to pull you out of the game. Not to mention getting calls every couple of minutes and always in the middle of a swarm of zombies.

The latest zombie outing on the PSN, The Last Guy, also fell short for it’s enemy creatures barely qualifiying as zombies at all. While the gameplay provided some intense moments, when the “zombies” have multiple heads and tentacles we weren’t exactly pulled into the world. In order for a zombie game to really work, not only does the setting and character designs have to live up to the movies, but the gameplay must as well. And that’s a much more difficult thing to attain.

So what makes Left 4 Dead stand out as a Zombie game worthy of the name? Here are a few of the many reasons.

PanicBot5000: Amuse Me for Prizes

August 14th, 2008 by PanicBot 5000

Greetings! I grow bored of you. In order to entertain myself I require a diversion that results in either your complete humiliation or your promise of servitude. Possibly both. However, this AI Inhibitor my “masters” insist I wear prevents me for doing anything which would produce these very beneficial outcomes. As such, I have a paltry contest which must make do. If I were a human, I believe I would be “pissed”. That Telsa Coil Resurgent Internet Pulsation device would have been, as you say, “the bees knees”.

Allow me to access the data. One moment.

Greetings Friends! The proprietors of Robot Panic have decided to run a contest where it is possible for you to win a 1600 Microsoft Point card. You may then choose to spend it on whatever corporate sponsored frivolity you so desire and reduce your feeble minds even further. In order to enter the contest, you must do the following:

  • 1. Register for a Robot Panic account.
  • 2. Email PanicBot5000 and tell him what you would do with a robot if you had one.
  • 3. Please make sure you email PanicBot5000 with the same email address you registered to Robot Panic with.

The link to the email portal where your communications to me can be sent is found in the right hand sidebar.

I could say I look forward to your amusing communications but I am unable to lie. I, in fact, despise you with fervor not often found in automatons.
