E3: Nintendo Press Conference

June 2nd, 2009 by Hilden

rsz_nintendo-logo
Hello again! Once more, thanks to Current Gaming and Phil Kollar, we bring you the highlight reel from the Nintendo Press Conference at this year’s E3. I thought there were some nice things, but people seem to be a bit bitchy about the showing. Hardcore gamer angst over the Wii still? You be the judge:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii: Looks like a take off of Zelda: Four Swords with a lot of 2D, 4 player action. You play as Mario and Luigi along with a couple of colored Toads. You can pick each other up to save each other from enemies, reach new areas and the like. You can switch between co-op and single player at any point. Out Holiday 2009. I like.

Wii Fit Plus: Milking at the tit of fat fucks the world over, the game that “kinda” makes you more healthy gets another round. This time they brag that the new game gives you more freedom to find an exercise routine that works for you. Mine involves beer. Doubt that’ll make it in there. 15 new mini-games included as well. New software bundled with board and without.

Wii Motion Plus: You remember the shit they were talking about last year? Yeah. It’s that. Again. Only now, they demonstrated a bit more of Wii Sports Resort with a skydiving event, some archery system that’s sketchy and a basketball game that sort of looks fun. Color me uninterested.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Grand Slam Tennis: Again, more sports shit that takes advantage of the Wii Motion Plus.

Red Steel 2: This was shown at the Ubi Soft press event last night. Looks bad ass to me. Your characters is a gunslinger with a sword. Built for 1 to 1 Wii Motion Plus control. Looks to solve a ton of the problems I had with the first one. Graphic style is the “Wii Graphic Novel” style we’ve come to know and love. Works for me.

Final Fantasy Open World..Something: Unnamed game that will use the Final Fantasy name. Touting it as an open world game specifically designed for the Wii.

Kingdom Hearts DS: Game coming out later this year. Looks great and I’m sure fans of the game are already planning how to eek more hours out of their day. Kollar comments that “It doesn’t look much worse than the PS2 games. That’s got to be one of the best-looking DS titles ever.”

Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story: So, Mario and Luigi get shrunk, get swallowed by Bowser. You get to explore the arch-fiend from the inside. Gross. And dirty. I know Mario been getting shit on but this is too much.

Golden Sun DS: FUCK. YES! If you’ve played the GBA versions of this awesome RPG, then you should already be excited. If you’ve never played them, the what the fuck are you doing reading this?! Go get it.

James Petterson Women’s Murder Club: James Patterson’s name should already tell anyone reading this site that it’s not a game for you. Instead, this one hits the desperate housewives of the world. Plays like an interactive novel. Maybe it will include a vibrator function for the sex scenes. I’m gonna go puke at the thought of millions of grandma’s playing this now. Thanks Nintendo.

COP: The Recruit: Ubisoft game targeted to the jaded hardcore crowd. You play a cop unraveling a conspiracy. You get to race around cars and..do shit in a third person perspective.

Style Savvy: Fuck this game.

DSi Ware: Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Bad ass! Downloadable title for the DSi that has a level creator. Able to share creations with your friends. Out on Monday!! Nice job, Nintendo.

WarioWare DIY: Again, a DSi game that allows you to create your own WarioWare style challenges and share them. I’m beginning to see the potential of this DSi.

DSi Facebook Love: This summer, you can post your DSi pictures to Facebook. Guess that’s the new trend these days. You can’t escape it. Don’t try.

Flipnotes Studio: For the DSi. Simple movie maker. If I were 10, I would have bought the system for this. Could be all kinds of kid friendly awesome.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks DS: Strangely, nothing shown, just mentioned. Oddly, you can play it on the show floor, so go searching for screens. They’ll be out there.

Wii Vitality Sensor: A peripheral that you wear on your finger like a ring that measures pressure in your body. Somehow, this will help you to relax? Not sure what this is about but there it is.

Super Mario Galaxy 2: The megaton announcement of the press event! A direct sequel to SMG and features the same look and feel. You get to ride on colored Yoshi’s this time and it includes some new power-ups and awesome environments. Coming out sometime in 2010, according to Reggie’s interview w/G4 after the conference. I can’t wait for this one!

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles: Latest RE Lightgun game. Rad.

Dead Space: Extraction: Wii prequel to last year’s horror game. Looks like another light gun game. Works for me. I love those damn things.

Metroid: Other M: Second bad ass announcement today! Looks like they gave Metroid to Team Ninja and it shows! All kinds of Ninja Gaiden influences here. Lots of action, looks bad ass and will hit in 2010. Nice!

So, there you have it. Personally, I’m pretty excited by a lot of this. Lots of games that make me giddy with Nintendo nerdy glee. Let us know what you think in the comment section and be sure to hit up Current Gaming for further awesome E3 coverage!

Punch-Out!! (Wii)

May 22nd, 2009 by Ian (DJI)

FTP wasn't workingWii disc. $50. 13×2+1 Opponents. Two-Player Versus Offline. Wiimote, Nunchuk, & Balance Board Compatible. No Leaderboards. 3-Chance Full Survival Mode

Worth the price?: Only for seasoned fans. Everybody else, wait for a price drop.
Recommended: Punch-Out fans, arcade gamers, boxing fans, anybody into twitch/memorization gameplay and pattern recognition; anybody who loves Nintendo-style boss fights.
Recommended: Looking for a game that requires skill and brain cells during a workout or another use for your Wii Fit balance board.
Not Recommended: Anybody looking for an epic or a modern vast content expansion of the franchise; especially online competition of any sort.
Not Recommended: Anybody who hates challenging games or trying, failing, then practicing/memorizing to overcome your obstacles. Also not for players who hate twitch-reflex gaming.

The original old-skool(z) Shadow of the Colossus shows up for another go after some 15 years. The third in the console series and fourth if you’re counting arcade, you get another game of rollin’ as Little Mac to defeat every stereotype around the world in a boxing match to win the WVBA(?) world title. Controls are simple Wiimote NES style with the 1 and 2 buttons being your left and right punches respectively, the D-pad acts as your dodges, ducks, blocks, and aiming punches toward the face, then you’ve got the A button which uses your star punches: the Killa Jesus Beatdown move. However, star punches are only earned by punching your opponent at an exact point in the middle of his attack or taunt. You can change your controls to Wiimote ‘n Nunchuk so you can punch for “real” like in the Wii Sports boxing. It’s a fun workout, but not as precise. If you want more workout, you can turn a Wii Fit balance board on so you can apply pressure on certain parts of the platform to dodge. I don’t have one of those, so I couldn’t try it.

Let’s Talk Punch Out!!

May 21st, 2009 by John

Most gamers who were alive during the NES era have stories about playing Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. The game was a cultural phenomenon. Just ask somebody in their late 20s or early 30s about King Hippo, Piston Honda, or Bald Bull, and chances are they’ll tell you the exact pattern needed to beat each one of those characters.

Personally, as a kid who didn’t own an NES, I spent two weeks of lawn-mowing money to rent an NES and a copy of the game from one of our local video stores so my friends and I could spend an entire weekend pounding cartoon stereotypes from around the world. We set the system up in our family room and camped out there for 48 hours, passing the controller back and forth. We never did beat Mike Tyson (this was before “Mr. Dream”), but we had a great time trying.

Next week on Drunken Gamers Radio, we’ll be reviewing the new version of Punch Out!! (can’t forget the exclamation points) for the Wii, but we’d also like to take a trip down memory lane with you. Please send in your Punch Out memories by calling into our voice mail line at 612-424-3835. Who were your favorite characters? How sore was your thumb after your marathon sessions? And did you ever beat Tyson?

Send your audio in by Saturday, May 23rd.

We hope to hear from you!

Well, the day is here when we’ve reached 200 shows. As always, shenanigans and worthless self-congratulating ensues. It’s a little tame this week, however, as we’re more the HUNG-OVER gamers after a bachelor party for a good friend put us all down for the count the night before.

In the meantime, we talk Dr. Mario for the DSi, Lode Runner for the XBLA and Excite Bots for the Wii. We talk the news and take some calls as we piss away another pseudo-milestone. Thanks, as always, for listening and putting up with our shit. Especially those of you who have been with us since #1. What the hell is wrong with you people?

The House of the Dead: Overkill (Post Playthrough)

February 13th, 2009 by Ian (DJI)

zombie!

The power went out at my job. DTE couldn’t fix it within a few hours, so they sent everybody home. When you get a free paid day off on a release day of a zombie game, you gotta go after that shit, man.

I don’t have to explain House of the Dead, right? Arcade rail shooter. Zombies. Done.

The great news is that all that grindhouse vibe they showed in the trailers wasn’t just an awesome marketing tactic. They keep that style going in the game from beginning to end. They even put this graphic filter on to make it look like you’re watching a drive-in theater as you play. Neat stuff. The House of the Dead 5 is the end result of Grindhouse’s Planet Terror meets Dead Alive [and/or the quality of].

The better news is remember all the other House of the Deads? Balls arcade hard you remember. Say you wanna just throw a zombie gun light gun game in and chill with your friend, you couldn’t get past stage 2 unless you brought over your hours-invested save file because you’d run out of continues right-quick. Overkill fixes all that since this House of the Dead 5 is the only one built from the ground up for home consoles. This is the party zombie gun game on rails. Now anybody can team up and make it from beginning to end in one sitting to bond and laugh at the campy cutscenes and f-bombs.

Well what if you played HotD for the tried and true arcade challenge? You ran through this in a few hours. What now? Well sir you get to increase the difficulty slightly, stage select whatever you want with your now-unlocked Dual Wielding support (2 wiimotes, 1 player, 2 different guns fuck yeeeah[!!!]), or you can play the Director’s Cut extended version of the game:

“Director’s Cut
You have a limited number of Continues in this mode, making it much more difficult to get to the end. This mode is only available upon completion of the main game and you are prohibited from commenting on Internet forums regarding The House of the Dead: OVERKILL until you have beaten it.”

-HotD: Overkill Instruction Manual

Oh I’ve beaten it. So you will hear exactly what I have to say!

Ultimate Shooting Collection: It Exists!

January 26th, 2009 by John

After countless months, a dozen delays, and a console switch, I just wanted to post a picture to prove that Ultimate Shooting Collection does exist and has in fact been released. In fact it was just dropped on my doorstep. I know Moe and Hilden won’t believe it until they actually get their grubby hands on it, but here it is in all its shmuptacular glory.

Put out by UFO Interactive, the folks who are supposedly also bringing Raiden IV to the Xbox 360, Ultimate Shooting Collection contains two games previously unreleased in the States, Radio Allergy and Karous, along with Chaos Field, which was put out on the GameCube once upon a time and is probably sitting in a bargain bin somewhere near your neighborhood.

Those few of you have been following this game may remember that Radio Allergy was originally scheduled to hit the Wii sometime in 2007 from O3 Entertainment. Apparently unable to translate it in any sort of reasonable time frame, it was rumored that they would be putting it out on the Wii instead. They then apparently let it slip and UFO snatched it up to include it in this collection. Kudos to them.

For those of you interested in picking up Ultimate Shooting Collection for either the upcoming Intergalactic Shmuppreciation Month or just for your collection, you can grab it here or here. Be quick, though. Who knows how long they’ll last.
