YouTube Oddity: Cave Tribute

August 21st, 2008 by John

I just found this video over at NeoGAF. It’s a guy with an extremely thick (or put-on) southern accent talking about Cave’s shmups. He also throws in a few funny jabs at our friends over at Shmups.com. My favorite line would have to be: “Like, I’ll give you a few million dollars to make Guwange 2, I already suck at Guwange, but give me another one to suck at.”

Anyway, sit back and enjoy, shmup fans.

UPDATE: DJ Incompetent swings in with some back story in the comments section below.

Bangai-O Spirits…Is It Me?

August 14th, 2008 by John

I’m a huge fan of Treasure and their games. Hell, any company that can pump out classics like Gunstar Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, and Gradius V deserves my cash no matter what they do. But with Bangai-O Spirits, I’m just not feelin’ it. Yet everywhere I look the game is getting rave reviews. What am I missing?

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should probably mention that I never got into the Dreamcast version either. I enjoyed bits of it, but the controls seemed odd and there was something about the game I just didn’t “get”. Nevertheless, I was able to squeeze some enjoyment out of it despite never having a grasp on exactly what the hell it was I was doing. Spirits, while kinda/sorta a remake of the original, is more puzzle game than action/shooter, plopping the player into levels and asking them to find the right combination of weapons to make it through. The problem is that nine times out of ten it becomes more trial-and-error than skill-based play. You choose your weapons before entering the level, and if you haven’t chosen the correct weapons beforehand you’ll face a “Game Over” screen in – no kidding – under five seconds. You’ll then be sent back to the stage selection screen and forced to try another combination of weapons. It’s punishing, unforgiving, and extremely frustrating.

Shooting Game Tournament 2008

August 8th, 2008 by John

Our friends over at Shmups.com are putting on their yearly competition, the Shooting Game Tournament or STGT 2008.

STGT 2008

According to the official thread:

Shooting Game Tournament 2008 is a friendly score competition among users of shmups.com. The score validation works like in the hi-score threads. You just play the game on PCB, emulator or any console port and post your score which you don’t need to prove. (However if you are a troll or have a questionable reputation, be prepared to be asked for snapshots or other verifications.) ANYONE CAN JOIN!

So you say you’re not a shmup expert, or don’t think you can hold your own against the experts at Shmups.com? Don’t sweat it. We’ve participated in the past – and our skill level is somewhere between “Novice” and “Monkey” – and it’s all in good fun.
