Play Shmups = Lifetime Extended!!

March 10th, 2009 by Ian (DJI)

1upSuper Noize Post, but whatever.

According to an awesomely questionable article from dailymail.co.uk, the better your reaction time, the longer you’re going to live. Like, real life; not in the game.

The 7,414 volunteers in the study have been followed since the mid-Eighties, when their reaction times were measured with an electrical device fitted with a small screen and five numbered buttons.

The volunteers had to press the matching button when a number appeared on screen. The time they took to react was measured and averages worked out.

Since then, 1,289 have died, 568 of them from heart disease.

The researchers then compared the reaction times, smoking habits, weight and other factors of those who had died with those who had survived.

The results showed that people with slow reactions were 2.6 times more likely to die prematurely from any cause. Smoking was the only factor linked to a larger risk of death – as it made it 3.03 times more likely.

Physical exercise, blood pressure, heart rate, waist-hip ratio, alcohol consumption and body-mass index all had a lesser effect.

In deaths caused specifically by heart disease, reaction time was the most important factor after blood pressure, this time having a greater effect than smoking.

The researchers said: ‘It has been hypothesized that reaction time, as a measure of speed of the brain’s information-processing capacity, may be a marker for bodily system integrity.

‘This way, slower reaction times, or poorer information-processing ability, might be an indication of suboptimal physiological functioning, which may in turn be related to early death.’

So maybe Brain Age doesn’t make you smarter, but keeps you alive? And then nursing homes will send back the Wii Bowling in exchange for Rock Band, but the old folks will only be allowed to play Visions on expert.

Either way, I suggest you go complete M.C.’s challenges.  Your life now depends on it.

Time to get me a bucket of KFC tonight! Gonna plan my retirement for age 114! I R Invincible!! OVERCONFIDENCE WOOO!!

Retro Shmupping On Your Japanese Playstation

March 3rd, 2009 by Moe

In honor of Intergalactic Shmuppreciation Month, I thought it would be nice to share a page I found a year or two ago with all you space pilots.  This is an independent article that highlights several Japanese space shooters for the original Playstation.  While you would need an import system to play these, you might want to consider the exciting price of such an endeavor.  Now follow the link and let’s take a little time to celebrate this torturous love.  I shmuppreciate you.

It’s Intergalactic Shmuppreciation Month!

March 2nd, 2009 by John

That’s right my friends, it’s March. And that means it’s once again time for Intergalactic Shmuppreciation Month! All month long we’ll be talking about the “space shooter” here at Robot Panic, and we’ll have special shmup-related segments on Drunken Gamers Radio, including the Shmopera.

But more importantly, MC Wilson is once again the…Master of Ceremonies…over at ShmupMonth.com. Here’s what to expect this time around:

As with last year, we’re sponsoring another contest, with another fantastic prize. This time around, the prize is a “Play It Cool” edition Japanese Sega Saturn in mint condition along with the classic Saturn shmup Dodonpachi! In case this prize wasn’t fantastic enough, we may also throw in an additional mystery shmup for the Saturn.

Last year’s contest theme was “Creativity”. This year, the theme is “Challenge”. We’re going to issue four challenges throughout the month of March, each for a shmup that’s available on either XBLA or PSN; and each time you complete a Challenge, your name goes into The Hat for the grand prize drawing. The winner will be decided at the end of the month…

You can get more contest information here, and we will of course be discussing this in detail on next week’s episode of Drunken Gamers Radio. In the meantime, head on over to ShmupMonth.com to learn how to enter and participate in the fun.

Frantic

January 1st, 2009 by Hilden

frantic-2
Astute reader, Brian, sent us a link to one of our favorite things: free shmups! This one is a Flash game entitled Frantic, which sits squarely in the “bullet hell” category. It’s elegant in design and plays very well but also manages to throw a few new things into the mix that give it some high replay value. First off, the graphics are a cell shaded, simply designed affair that works well in this Flash game. I always think a more simple and stylish approach to Flash games work better than anything else and this proves true in Frantic’s case. Enemy designs are clean and easy to read and it must be pointed out that the boss designs are particularly good.

Shooting is automatic, so your only job is to dodge the bullet patterns that come your way. It starts out simple, but by level 4 you’ll be feeling it a bit, so get those tap-dodging skills ready for some use. As you kill enemies, your “adrenaline” meter fills up which gives you a special attack. In addition, you gain score multipliers and collect yellow orbs which function as currency and can be spent after every level. The money can be spent on cards, which can add all kinds of upgrades to your ship. These upgrades include such things as stronger shields, stronger weapons or drone/helper planes of various types. You can add up to five cards at a time and when you want to add something new, you can sell off old cards in order to buy new ones. This card mechanic really works well and gives it that addicting RPG-esque quality.

The game starts off pretty easy but ramps up in difficulty as you move forward. Nothing that a player of DoDonPachi or the like can’t handle but a fun challenge for those looking for some simple fun.

Overall, I highly recommend Frantic for any shooter fan in the mood for a free and quality experience. You can find Frantic here. Over at it’s home sight, Polymer Rabbit.com, you can also find a list of other awesome Flash based shmups to help your steady decline of productivity continue well into 2009.

Thanks to Brian for the link and we hope you all enjoy!

YouTube Oddity: Cave Tribute

August 21st, 2008 by John

I just found this video over at NeoGAF. It’s a guy with an extremely thick (or put-on) southern accent talking about Cave’s shmups. He also throws in a few funny jabs at our friends over at Shmups.com. My favorite line would have to be: “Like, I’ll give you a few million dollars to make Guwange 2, I already suck at Guwange, but give me another one to suck at.”

Anyway, sit back and enjoy, shmup fans.

UPDATE: DJ Incompetent swings in with some back story in the comments section below.
