Gran Turismo PSP

September 17th, 2010 by tribrix

Okay, so you’re thinking, “Why is he talking about that old thing?” And I’ll tell you, I put off buying this for a long time, and now that it’s a “Greatest Hit” it seems more than worth the price of admission. So I finally caved, and I’m happy to report that I don’t regret that move.

One reason I waited so long is the well-publicized redactions this game has, relative to it’s “home” console cousins. There is no career mode, almost no car tweaking, and no infrastructure online play. Add the fact that all tracks are open at the start and you might wonder if the game is even worth trying. I did. But in this case, I can make the argument that they burned the village in order to save it. By which I mean assuming they filled that little UMD to the rim with data, I wouldn’t take anything out of the game to make room for the missing elements. In Gran Turismo PSP you have driving game that, in races, feels just like its grown up counterparts. The physics, the graphics, and the overall feel comes from the same DNA. And it shows.

If they would have had to sacrifice some gameplay quality to fit in a career mode, I’d call the game a failure. Furthermore, in some ways, not having a career mode gives the game greater longevity, in that there’s no game to finish here. Sure, you could make it your goal to collect every car available, but you’re gonna get bored long before that happens. In career mode on the home versions, you could always win little race series and build your car collection faster. But here you have to earn every single dollar you’re going to spend buying cars, and it takes lots of time to earn the cash to buy those pricey race cars. (more…)

Sony? Add a few more to PSN before giving up on PSPgo?

May 14th, 2010 by Ian (DJI)

Daily HAZEL´s PSP GO !!!!So it’s been about seven months of life with a PSPgo. Sony lied about UMD conversions and new UMDs releasing with PSN versions, my hardware broke and repaired for $100 through SCEA, I got to spend four days redownloading my game collection while thanking god unlike Nintendo downloads my account is transferable, and I listen with my head in my hands while the giga-nerd backlash continues against Go about ownership of media while the same idiots praise Apple for having all their games on one place.  ‘Lots of love-hate relationship running around.

Well friends, I love my PSPgo; still. My 40+ collection in pocket size continues to outweigh the costs. It is a strange love.

I know because of Sony’s infamous new-hotness pricing backlashs, the PSPgo is the worst selling system of all the consoles while regular PSP is somewhere on the up-’n-up. I know Sony is working on PSP2-hyphen-comma-phone. I know the flow of updating old UMDs to a PSP version dwindled after the curbstomping hardware sales results.  Therefore I’m educated-guessing my machine isn’t going to be supported too much longer. That’s ok I guess. Before I bought PSPgo, I did a bunch of consumer research and wrote down a list of games I wanted to make sure get PSN ported before I jumped on the device. Surprisingly, my wishes were granted on most of those.  This article is about the missing few that should have hit the download service six months ago.

Sony, can you hit up your developers and get these titles on your downloadable network? Pretty please?

Thoughts on Digital Reading

December 17th, 2009 by Ian (DJI)

stolens

“How’re you feeling about the PSP comic store/digital comics in general? Me? I think I’m sticking with paper. I’m fuckin old school!”

-John via Twitter

I think publications on PSP are a great idea. I’d totally get into books and such again if they were actually available on devices I’m always carrying on me. Does the iPhone do ebooks? Probably some kind of rigged app or a few standalone apps, but on no universal book reader, right? I can settle for comics. One thing on comics is I like to sit there and examine the art in great detail. The PSP comic viewer let’s me do that. I can zoom out or in as I please and pan the page around to study every which way. There’s even this Autoflow thing where mashing L & R Buttons automatically zeroes in on all the relevant screen placements, making reading these things as lazy as you wish. Button config is even available.

A massive plus is the custom soundtracks function that somewhat works with this comic viewer. Too many times I’m walkin’ somewhere with my PSP music goin’, then when I go to sit down and switch to a game, I have to stop the good sounds for crappy game music from R-Type Command. Say I’m in a podcast I want to listen to but don’t want to sit there and stare at the wall, I can whip out a comic instead without holding up my audio. The music player is limited though. There’s no fast forward function for picking up where you left off in a long track and it doesn’t support PSPgo very well, so the player can only read from the system storage but not from the expandable cards (where I keep all my music). I’m not even sure it supports playlists. Thanks Japan!

Either way, the big draw for me on PSP comics is portability and hiding what I got. I work with baby boomers. They’re not very smart. I got the heavy stink eye when I sat in the public commons and had a lunch while reading Watchmen. I’d much prefer masking what I’m looking at and maintain the privacy. Sure I’m 20-something years old and it’s not a big deal for me to defend what I’m into, but I also value solo downtime above most things, so avoiding possibility of needless conflict with nosy old people idiots with high judging and poor listening skills is a selling point. Since I don’t do a lot of reading when I’m at home, I pretty much have to bring whatever I intend to read with me somewhere else. At home I’d prefer the music, gaming, or time with the pre-wife, so books are right-out. I’m not owning a man-purse ever, so that leaves me with whatever fits in my pocket. PSP works, a tube hanging out a foot above my back pocket doesn’t.

E3: Sony Press Conference

June 3rd, 2009 by Hilden

rsz_stock_sony_logo
Sorry we’re late on this one. That last episode of DGR got in the way of productivity but I’m here to make it up to you by once again stealing all of Phil Kollar’s hard work. It’s what we do.

Here’s the highlights from yesterday’s Sony E3 Press Conference:

Uncharted 2: One of my favorite PS3 games gets a worthy sequel and by the look of the demo, it’s going to be pretty bad ass. Multiplayer Beta began yesterday. Lot’s of jumping off of ridiculously good looking rooftops and such. Impressive set pieces. Looks to be a graphical showcase. Still can’t tell if they’ve fixed the 100 shots to kill a guy problem. Still, I’m excited for this one.

MAG: 256 player live demo. Pretty damn impressive to see it all in action. Graphics a noticeable step down from Uncharted, but with 256 players, that’s to be expected. Massive areas and lots of tactics gameplay going on. Looks impressive to watch. How easy will that be to pull off when you’re actually playing it? Still, going to be a PS3 highlight for sure.

PSP Go!: A sexier version of the console with a drop down control pad. Much, much smaller and without a UMD drive. UMD’s will still be produced and supported, despite the move to a digital distribution model with the PSP Go. More big franchises coming to the handheld than any other year. Which is good because the dust is collecting on mine. New program called “Sense Me” produces music playlists for PSP music users. Video service available directly from the PSP. Price tag=$250.00 which means no sale for this poor lad.

Gran Turismo PSP: They were pimping this at the E3 I was at when they launched the damn system. I guess it’s for realz now. 800 cars, 35 tracks and 60 layout variations. Ad hoc multiplayer with a bad ass trading feature which allows you to share cars with your friends. Cool.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: Kojima is writing and producing this “true sequel to the Metal Gear franchise”. Takes place in the 70′s, after MGS 3. Fine by me. Love that game. Four snakes shown, presumably Big Boss, Solid, Solidus and Liquid. I can’t fucking wait.

Fat Princess PSP: Big surprise of the show that was flashed on the video screen. Play Fat Princess on your PSP. Bad ass. Or is that Fat Ass?

Persona PSP: I think this one is old news, but it bears repeating. Persona on a handheld. That’ll be the thing that finally hooks me into this series for good.

Agent: New Rockstar property that was announced but not shown in any way. Just a logo. PS3 exclusive.

Assassin’s Creed 2: Some great gameplay featuring new move sets and more assassination techniques. Graphics and animation look flawless. Set in Italy with an ancestor of the hero you played in the first game. You get to ride on DiVinci invented machines. A stretch but the gameplay looked awesome, with the character taking the famous “flying machine” out to ride some thermals. Getting excited about this one. Released alongside a PSP game that can hook in in some fashion.

Final Fantasy XIII: Awesome video that shows the more Sci-Fi inspired story this time around. Still no gameplay shown, but it looked nice.

Final Fantasy XIV: One of the big surprises at the Sony event was the next, presumably online, edition in the franchise. Only video was shown, so not much to tell. Looks to be a more traditional fantasy inspired setting this time out. PS3 exclusive and supposedly out in 2010.

Sony Motion Controller: Looks like a WiiMote with a ball on top. Some impressive tech demonstrations that show off the 1 to 1 detection along with how it could be used in-game. The obligatory bow and arrow demo was there. Still very early but I found the two nerds who did the demo endearing.

Mod Nation Racers: Touted as a new game in the “Play, Create, Share” line, this cart racer features customizable characters and a super easy level creator. Only problem is the things you create look pretty damn cookie cutter. A true case of being so easy to use that all you can create is lame shit. Might be great for soccer moms. Racing looked good with the standard weapons and drifting.

Last Guardian: Same trailer that got leaked onto the internet a few days before E3. Latest in the Ico/Shadow line of games. Looks amazing on the graphic side of things and the music was pretty damn good as well. Something about a boy riding a creature around.

Gran Turismo 5: Looks awesome, no surprise here. Looks to have NASCAR integrated into the game. So if you like left turns, this ‘ll be your game. Some of the cars look damn nice. Possibly damage on the cars? Couldn’t quite tell, but it looked possible.

God of War 3: The ass kicker to end the set. Brutal gameplay x10. Looks fantastic and very God of War. Some new flight mechanic that allows you to glide seems to be in there. Pretty excited about this one as well.

And that was the show. Some very exciting things happening over in the Sony camp and I look forward to seeing all these in action in 2010.

If you have any thoughts or impressions from E3 that you would like to share and have broadcast on the next episode of Drunken Gamers Radio, please submit them. Call 612-424-3835 or email at mailbag@drunkengamersradio.com.

Please submit on or before Saturday, June 6th.
