Yakuza 3

February 18th, 2011 by Gruel

Yakuza 3 coverI know I am nearly a year late to the party, but that is how long it took me to knock Yakuza 3 out of my backlog. Actually, I breezed through the first four chapters of the game when I bought it last summer, and it promptly got whisked away into the backlog when the first half of 2010 was hammered hard with an unbelievable amount of tip-top games. The first couple months of 2011 I have dedicated to making some headway into my backlog, and the last couple weeks I have belonged to Yakuza 3. And with the release of Yakuza 4 just a month away, what ideal timing would it be for me to freshen everyone up on the series’ PS3 debut.

Once again, you control Kazuma who is now trying to put his dark past behind him. How does he go about changing his ways? By running an orphanage in Okinawa of course! Having Kazuma living a peaceful life in an orphanage would not make a great game, so naturally the land it is built on happens to be in the way of a pesky resort deal that is trying to rear its ugly head. It would not be a Yakuza; game either if this resort had ties to the Prime Minister and a bunch of Kazuma’s old Yakuza running buddies. Thus we have Kazuma’s impetus to getting dragged back to kicking some Yakuza tail!

Even if you have not played the first two Yakuza games, Yakuza 3 is still a good hopping on point because it features recap videos for both of the prior installments in the series to catch you up on all the events that have led up to third game in the franchise. The narrative is by far the strongest part of this game. It tells a great story even when I thought it started off kind of ridiculous with Sega making sure you get to know each and every single one of orphans that Kazuma is in charge of.

I kid you not, of the nineteen hours it took me to finish Yakuza 3, about five or six of them were spent doing mandatory quests for the orphans. This was my only real gripe with the story. I get setting up how good Kazuma has it and how happy he is with his life, but there was just way too much time spent in the orphanage. Eventually though, Sega reeled me in and got me to care about those orphans and to make sure no evil resort would be built over their orphanage!

E3: Sony Press Conference

June 3rd, 2009 by Hilden

rsz_stock_sony_logo
Sorry we’re late on this one. That last episode of DGR got in the way of productivity but I’m here to make it up to you by once again stealing all of Phil Kollar’s hard work. It’s what we do.

Here’s the highlights from yesterday’s Sony E3 Press Conference:

Uncharted 2: One of my favorite PS3 games gets a worthy sequel and by the look of the demo, it’s going to be pretty bad ass. Multiplayer Beta began yesterday. Lot’s of jumping off of ridiculously good looking rooftops and such. Impressive set pieces. Looks to be a graphical showcase. Still can’t tell if they’ve fixed the 100 shots to kill a guy problem. Still, I’m excited for this one.

MAG: 256 player live demo. Pretty damn impressive to see it all in action. Graphics a noticeable step down from Uncharted, but with 256 players, that’s to be expected. Massive areas and lots of tactics gameplay going on. Looks impressive to watch. How easy will that be to pull off when you’re actually playing it? Still, going to be a PS3 highlight for sure.

PSP Go!: A sexier version of the console with a drop down control pad. Much, much smaller and without a UMD drive. UMD’s will still be produced and supported, despite the move to a digital distribution model with the PSP Go. More big franchises coming to the handheld than any other year. Which is good because the dust is collecting on mine. New program called “Sense Me” produces music playlists for PSP music users. Video service available directly from the PSP. Price tag=$250.00 which means no sale for this poor lad.

Gran Turismo PSP: They were pimping this at the E3 I was at when they launched the damn system. I guess it’s for realz now. 800 cars, 35 tracks and 60 layout variations. Ad hoc multiplayer with a bad ass trading feature which allows you to share cars with your friends. Cool.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: Kojima is writing and producing this “true sequel to the Metal Gear franchise”. Takes place in the 70′s, after MGS 3. Fine by me. Love that game. Four snakes shown, presumably Big Boss, Solid, Solidus and Liquid. I can’t fucking wait.

Fat Princess PSP: Big surprise of the show that was flashed on the video screen. Play Fat Princess on your PSP. Bad ass. Or is that Fat Ass?

Persona PSP: I think this one is old news, but it bears repeating. Persona on a handheld. That’ll be the thing that finally hooks me into this series for good.

Agent: New Rockstar property that was announced but not shown in any way. Just a logo. PS3 exclusive.

Assassin’s Creed 2: Some great gameplay featuring new move sets and more assassination techniques. Graphics and animation look flawless. Set in Italy with an ancestor of the hero you played in the first game. You get to ride on DiVinci invented machines. A stretch but the gameplay looked awesome, with the character taking the famous “flying machine” out to ride some thermals. Getting excited about this one. Released alongside a PSP game that can hook in in some fashion.

Final Fantasy XIII: Awesome video that shows the more Sci-Fi inspired story this time around. Still no gameplay shown, but it looked nice.

Final Fantasy XIV: One of the big surprises at the Sony event was the next, presumably online, edition in the franchise. Only video was shown, so not much to tell. Looks to be a more traditional fantasy inspired setting this time out. PS3 exclusive and supposedly out in 2010.

Sony Motion Controller: Looks like a WiiMote with a ball on top. Some impressive tech demonstrations that show off the 1 to 1 detection along with how it could be used in-game. The obligatory bow and arrow demo was there. Still very early but I found the two nerds who did the demo endearing.

Mod Nation Racers: Touted as a new game in the “Play, Create, Share” line, this cart racer features customizable characters and a super easy level creator. Only problem is the things you create look pretty damn cookie cutter. A true case of being so easy to use that all you can create is lame shit. Might be great for soccer moms. Racing looked good with the standard weapons and drifting.

Last Guardian: Same trailer that got leaked onto the internet a few days before E3. Latest in the Ico/Shadow line of games. Looks amazing on the graphic side of things and the music was pretty damn good as well. Something about a boy riding a creature around.

Gran Turismo 5: Looks awesome, no surprise here. Looks to have NASCAR integrated into the game. So if you like left turns, this ‘ll be your game. Some of the cars look damn nice. Possibly damage on the cars? Couldn’t quite tell, but it looked possible.

God of War 3: The ass kicker to end the set. Brutal gameplay x10. Looks fantastic and very God of War. Some new flight mechanic that allows you to glide seems to be in there. Pretty excited about this one as well.

And that was the show. Some very exciting things happening over in the Sony camp and I look forward to seeing all these in action in 2010.

If you have any thoughts or impressions from E3 that you would like to share and have broadcast on the next episode of Drunken Gamers Radio, please submit them. Call 612-424-3835 or email at mailbag@drunkengamersradio.com.

Please submit on or before Saturday, June 6th.

Flower and the STG

March 5th, 2009 by Ian (DJI)

From Comments of DGR: 02.27.2009

Your comments on Flower are pretty interesting, John, in light of the podcast I heard right before this week’s episode. I was listening to a recent episode of The Geekbox in which Ryan Scott was discussing R-Type Dimensions. His take on the game was essentially this:

“It’s good, it’s really hard… Thank God they put in Infinite Mode because it’s too hard for me to get through otherwise. But the game’s really short– I mean, you can blow through it in 45 minutes.”

While this is technically true, as shmup fans, we get a lot more out of the R-Type experience than this guy did. Perhaps the same is true for Flower. Obviously, you can’t directly compare Flower with a shmup– DJ Incompetent is likely to vomit upon reading this, in fact– but for many folks, the experience that they get from playing through Flower is good enough that the length isn’t a concern.

- M.C.

I hear what you’re saying. Flower is a “flight-ish” game for certain, reminding me almost of Nights.

I have no problem with short games. Hell, I wish a lot of games were much shorter than they are. I just don’t have time for it anymore. But it wasn’t just the length of Flower that gave me pause. It was just the feeling of, “They could have done so much more with this” that I had when it was done. But like I said, I sort of go back and forth with it. The experience I had playing it was mostly great and often unlike any other game I’ve played. That itself is worth the price. But when I finished it I just had this sort of unfulfilled feeling.

- John

As far as I’m concerned, short games are fine, but I put a lot of value in games that offer options and alternate ways to play through the content. That is what earns the timeless replayable triple-A award for me. Did you know one of the bigger complaints expert players have on Gradius V is that it’s too long? This game clocks in at about an hour, but the ideal time STG players (myself included) want to spend on a one-credit session is roughly 30-something minutes. This is a large complaint for many Compile games as well (Aleste series, Zanac series, etc.), being long stages are a fault and not a feature, especially when they have dead zones of no on-screen enemies for several seconds. An ideal way to maximize content of a single shmup title is to have several different ‘courses’ of 5 stages instead of one massive 8-stage trek. Developers have not thought to include this option besides the compilation multi-game packages. Raycrisis explored this by allowing users to plot a course of five stages out of a selectable eight.

But what’s the issue here with the semi-controversial Flower and FlOw?
They’re great stand-alone games, but players complain not enough is done with it.

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

March 2nd, 2009 by badbad_leroybrown

sonics_ultimate_genesis_collection_020309
My oh my do I miss the good ole’ days of my youth. Back in those days, the internet was just getting started, and the flame war hadn’t even been conceived. Back in those days, there was no Microsoft, and there was no Sony. There were two companies: Nintendo and Sega (unless you were John, too busy loving the Atari Jaguar after “the incident”). And the young-uns out there like to talk about the current console wars, but those of us who lived through the greatest generation remember the single biggest, baddest, and bloodiest console war the world had ever seen: Super Nintendo Vs. Sega Genesis. Back in those days, the battlefield wasn’t on message boards or in the blogosphere, but rather on the playgrounds or in the cafeterias of this great nation’s schools. Here you could see and hear the battle raging all around you. I know because I was there. I was THERE, in the middle of that hell with my brothers around me, as I was a captain in the Sega army.

It wasn’t my decision. My parents made that decision for me on that fateful Christmas morning in the year 1991when they gave me my weapon of choice. And from that moment, I knew who my leader was as I marched straight to the front lines to fight for what was right and just. I still believe in the principles laid down by early Sega. The great visionaries who laid the groundwork for an entire empire which I helped pave with my piggybank. Those men rewarded my loyalty with a hero who could lead us to victory over the evil plumber and his fascist regime. Our fearless leader was a blue hedgehog named Sonic, and he fought along my side through the good and the bad. There were other heroes like Axel, Shinobi, Chaz, and Vectorman, but the deeds of these patriots pale to the heroics of Sonic.

Unfortunately our struggle was lost. Our leaders led us astray with far too many add-ons. Our failed surprise attack on the market during what was to be known as “Saturnday” failed miserably. When the Saturn needed resupply from Japan, our American generals had no faith in their abilities in combat and were thrown to the wayside. The small island nation of Working Designs kept the holdouts like myself supplied with the ammo we needed to fight back. However their batshit crazy dictator Vic Ireland was a greedy man who supplied our mysterious new enemy named Sony with arms as well, which was another nail in the coffin. All that were left after the unspeakable casualties banded together in one last desperate attempt to keep our sovereignty with Operation #9.9.99. At first we were successful, but Sony then crushed our final resistance, and we were forced to do unspeakable acts.

It hurts to think about what has happened to our once proud leaders. Shinobi and Shining Force went on to be shells of their former selves with Sony. Some moved onto Microsoft where they flourished with fantastic bravery but were completely ignored by their new home and perished. And Sonic…he never recovered. After the Dreamcast Blitzkrieg failed, he just kept trying and trying to relive past glory, but he was overworked. Last I heard he was drugged out in some back alley in Philly. To think my hero would let this happen to him. I can’t even bear the sight of him anymore. It just hurts too much. Old timers like myself like to remember the good ole’ days of yore. The 16 bit era stays in our memories as a sign of what could have been, and it’s great to see that there are indeed still people at Sega committed to keeping the memories of those lost alive in the form of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

HOME At Last

December 10th, 2008 by Hilden

No f-ing way. I realize you can find this news in every corner of the internet by now, but I feel obliged to post it here. Being that the long absence and always in motion “release date” have been a source of consternation for us on Drunken Gamers Radio, we’re happy to see that we’ll be part of the cool kids club as of Thursday, when HOME goes into it’s official open public Beta phase.

HOME, as a service, is something we’ve been looking forward to for some time. In fact, it’s one of the major reasons John folded up and bought a PS3 in the first place. Long time listeners of DGR/TFL will remember that we were no fan of the enormous price tag on Sony’s behemoth and as such, planned to wait until the inevitable price drop. We were so adamant about it that listeners like Jarrod Johnston decided it was time to send us reviews of the PS3 games we couldn’t cover. God bless him.

However, during a holiday excursion to Chicago, I received a call from John stating that the recent Sony press conference had done it’s dirty work and at the very sight of HOME, the wheels were set in motion. Shortly after…I followed. For much the same reasons. While Moe may be the last hold out, he is the most adamant of the three of us on taking Sony to task for the long wait and missed deadlines.

We had a chance to sit down and check out the Beta when Torgo was over this last weekend and I have to say, it’s impressive. While it was a rather empty experience on the day we were looking at it, I have to say that the scope and magnitude of the service looks to be impressive. If you thought the connectivity and social aspect of the NXE was something, be prepared to fall in love with this damn thing as the comparisons to Second Life are not that far off the mark. Of course, there’s no telling if you can actually cheat on your wife. I guess we’ll see about that.

According to a statement given by Kaz Hirai, it looks like the service will be launching with spaces dedicated to Warhawk, Resistance, Far Cry 2, Uncharted and Guitar Hero. Looks like it’s a good time to be a PS3 owner. I’ll see you all in my apartment. The party starts at 7:00 CST and I’ll be the naked guy in the corner. Hitting on your wife.
