E3: Namedrops 2010! (Nintendo’s Chat Reactions)

June 15th, 2010 by Ian (DJI)

marblesI think I overheard Metroid Other M is coming August and Golden Sun is in November. 3DS? No idea. Everything else; that all next year so no need to go on all about that. You fun folks did. Let’s listen in to all the happy things you said. See Hilden? Positivity! Elders will smile upon the game community you’ve cultivated!

Naw man, seriously I think nobody knocked this conference. Good news. Oh and thanks for saying what you’re talking about. Because I’m still fumbling in the dark over here. Fumbling.

11:26 mormonrage: DK is a done deal. What would be rad is if they had Steve Wiebe introduce it
11:26 TeamFremont: If Wiebe is here, press conference of show.
11:26 antonhritz: DGR will go bananas…
11:27 mormonrage: hell yeah. Then Billy Mitchell crashes the stage and it gets all lucha libre
11:27 antonhritz: and by that i mean they will buy banana flavored tabacco for the huka

12:03 TeamFremont: philosophy ass kicking in 3 2 1
12:03 philhaymes-1: nice!
12:03 philhaymes-1: nintendo already won
12:04 rockhstrongo: you can feel the nerdgasms

E3: Nintendo Press Conference

June 2nd, 2009 by Hilden

rsz_nintendo-logo
Hello again! Once more, thanks to Current Gaming and Phil Kollar, we bring you the highlight reel from the Nintendo Press Conference at this year’s E3. I thought there were some nice things, but people seem to be a bit bitchy about the showing. Hardcore gamer angst over the Wii still? You be the judge:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii: Looks like a take off of Zelda: Four Swords with a lot of 2D, 4 player action. You play as Mario and Luigi along with a couple of colored Toads. You can pick each other up to save each other from enemies, reach new areas and the like. You can switch between co-op and single player at any point. Out Holiday 2009. I like.

Wii Fit Plus: Milking at the tit of fat fucks the world over, the game that “kinda” makes you more healthy gets another round. This time they brag that the new game gives you more freedom to find an exercise routine that works for you. Mine involves beer. Doubt that’ll make it in there. 15 new mini-games included as well. New software bundled with board and without.

Wii Motion Plus: You remember the shit they were talking about last year? Yeah. It’s that. Again. Only now, they demonstrated a bit more of Wii Sports Resort with a skydiving event, some archery system that’s sketchy and a basketball game that sort of looks fun. Color me uninterested.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Grand Slam Tennis: Again, more sports shit that takes advantage of the Wii Motion Plus.

Red Steel 2: This was shown at the Ubi Soft press event last night. Looks bad ass to me. Your characters is a gunslinger with a sword. Built for 1 to 1 Wii Motion Plus control. Looks to solve a ton of the problems I had with the first one. Graphic style is the “Wii Graphic Novel” style we’ve come to know and love. Works for me.

Final Fantasy Open World..Something: Unnamed game that will use the Final Fantasy name. Touting it as an open world game specifically designed for the Wii.

Kingdom Hearts DS: Game coming out later this year. Looks great and I’m sure fans of the game are already planning how to eek more hours out of their day. Kollar comments that “It doesn’t look much worse than the PS2 games. That’s got to be one of the best-looking DS titles ever.”

Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story: So, Mario and Luigi get shrunk, get swallowed by Bowser. You get to explore the arch-fiend from the inside. Gross. And dirty. I know Mario been getting shit on but this is too much.

Golden Sun DS: FUCK. YES! If you’ve played the GBA versions of this awesome RPG, then you should already be excited. If you’ve never played them, the what the fuck are you doing reading this?! Go get it.

James Petterson Women’s Murder Club: James Patterson’s name should already tell anyone reading this site that it’s not a game for you. Instead, this one hits the desperate housewives of the world. Plays like an interactive novel. Maybe it will include a vibrator function for the sex scenes. I’m gonna go puke at the thought of millions of grandma’s playing this now. Thanks Nintendo.

COP: The Recruit: Ubisoft game targeted to the jaded hardcore crowd. You play a cop unraveling a conspiracy. You get to race around cars and..do shit in a third person perspective.

Style Savvy: Fuck this game.

DSi Ware: Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Bad ass! Downloadable title for the DSi that has a level creator. Able to share creations with your friends. Out on Monday!! Nice job, Nintendo.

WarioWare DIY: Again, a DSi game that allows you to create your own WarioWare style challenges and share them. I’m beginning to see the potential of this DSi.

DSi Facebook Love: This summer, you can post your DSi pictures to Facebook. Guess that’s the new trend these days. You can’t escape it. Don’t try.

Flipnotes Studio: For the DSi. Simple movie maker. If I were 10, I would have bought the system for this. Could be all kinds of kid friendly awesome.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks DS: Strangely, nothing shown, just mentioned. Oddly, you can play it on the show floor, so go searching for screens. They’ll be out there.

Wii Vitality Sensor: A peripheral that you wear on your finger like a ring that measures pressure in your body. Somehow, this will help you to relax? Not sure what this is about but there it is.

Super Mario Galaxy 2: The megaton announcement of the press event! A direct sequel to SMG and features the same look and feel. You get to ride on colored Yoshi’s this time and it includes some new power-ups and awesome environments. Coming out sometime in 2010, according to Reggie’s interview w/G4 after the conference. I can’t wait for this one!

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles: Latest RE Lightgun game. Rad.

Dead Space: Extraction: Wii prequel to last year’s horror game. Looks like another light gun game. Works for me. I love those damn things.

Metroid: Other M: Second bad ass announcement today! Looks like they gave Metroid to Team Ninja and it shows! All kinds of Ninja Gaiden influences here. Lots of action, looks bad ass and will hit in 2010. Nice!

So, there you have it. Personally, I’m pretty excited by a lot of this. Lots of games that make me giddy with Nintendo nerdy glee. Let us know what you think in the comment section and be sure to hit up Current Gaming for further awesome E3 coverage!

Nintendo DSi

April 13th, 2009 by badbad_leroybrown

Nintendo DSi
Pop quiz people: I want you to name me one company, videogames or otherwise, in the entire world currently in a better situation then Nintendo. You can’t. That’s because there isn’t one. What Nintendo is doing given this economic climate is completely baffling and defies and and all kinds of logic. They’re actually talking about raising the price of the Wii in Great Britain! Nintendo is no longer a videogame company; they’re a cultural phenomenon.

The most amazing part of this whole thing is that they’ve done it while infuriating the core market that has kept them afloat for years no matter how stupid and unjustified their arguments are. My personal opinion on the whole Nintendo thing is that I think it’s fantastic that games are becoming more mainstream and just because the games that are mainstream aren’t the games Nintendo’s detractors like doesn’t make them bad and doesn’t mean the games they like will stop being made, so everybody wins right? Well Nintendo is trying to keep the trendy train going by releasing the Nintendo DSi, and it looks as though Nintendo has no means of stopping any time soon.

So let’s start with the newer design. In a word? Slick. First off, I love the blue. I know most people don’t, but I think it’s pretty fresh. Also while the DS Lite had a shiny finish, the DSi does not, meaning the thing doesn’t get smothered in fingerprints, which is nice. You could make the argument that the color and finish make this thing look more toyish, but I think it’s an improvement. Besides, it is a toy so pull your head out of your ass. The power slider has been replaced with a normal button which is now under the D-Pad, and the new SD card slot is now where the power slider used to be. The volume slider has also been made into volume buttons now located on the left hand side of the machine instead of on the bottom left corner. The biggest improvement is in the buttons themselves. They are much tighter feeling, with all of them having a nice clickyness to them, particularly the L & R buttons, which are much better. The machine is slimmer overall, but you’d never really notice this unless doing a direct comparison between the two. My only gripe about the new design is that there is a slight squeak if you slowly close the clamshell, but hopefully that is just new plastic on new plastic and it will go away.

NES Game Atlas

February 27th, 2009 by John

Here’s another walk down memory lane…

The combo platter of Retro Game Challenge and 1up’s Retro Games Blog inspired me to pick up this little item: the NES Game Atlas.

Back in the 90s, Nintendo often provided slick subscription bonuses for Nintendo Power subscribers. Often it was a strategy guide or t-shirt, but the really cool bonuses were the Game Atlas series. They put out a Game Boy Atlas, an all-encompassing Mario guide, and one or two others. But it was this NES Game Atlas that I remember most fondly.

The NES Game Atlas includes complete maps and walkthroughs for not only some of the most classic first-party NES titles, but also some of the best third-party titles like Mega Man I-III, Duck Tales, Ninja Gaiden I and II, Castlevania I-III, and more.

More images after the break.

DSi Preorders Open Today

February 19th, 2009 by John

Bit of a slow day today, but hey, we figure since the DS has brought us so much joy why not discuss the new Nintendo DSi? Stores, including Amazon, are now accepting preorders prior to the April 5th release date. The console is going to run $169.99 and includes dual 3.25″ screens (compared to the DS Lite’s 3″ screens), two cameras, internal storage, an SD Card slot, a music player, and the ability to browse the internet. It comes in two colors: black and blue. For some reason, Nintendo of America decided to skip the popular white, despite the fact that it’s all over the above video.

So, time to utilize the comments section, my friends. What do you think of the DSi? Excited? Meh? Will you be rushing to make your preorder, or waiting to see what all the fuss is about? Personally, I play the DS more than any other console and have more games for it than any other current system. I love the system’s unique variety of titles and steady release of games. Because of this, I’ve already made my preorder this morning and will be there first thing on the morning of April 5th to grab my black DSi.

Retro Game Challenge

February 12th, 2009 by John

I am an unapologetic nostalgia whore. I spend untold amounts of cash chasing down memories from years gone by with the hope that I’ll be able to turn those memories into tangible items that can make me warm and fuzzy at a moment’s notice. Hell, I’m even nostalgic for things that I’m too young to have experienced. My favorite actor is Humphrey Bogart, I love antiques, and the music that suits me best is generally the stuff that was around long before I was born.

To make a long story short: Retro Game Challenge was made for me. When XSEED decided to take a chance on localizing Game Center CX: Arino no Chousenjou, I was their target audience. I am one of those people who twenty years ago obsessed over NES games and poured over each and every issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Nintendo Power. I sat on the floor in front of a television set, usually with a friend or my brother, for hours trying to beat Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Bros., Faxanadu, Kung Fu, and countless other games. We’d challenge each other to find secrets, unlock items, and get as far as we could. And it was fantastic.

Retro Game Challenge recreates these memories almost perfectly. Containing eight games brilliantly designed in the Famicom/NES style, you play as yourself, transported back to the 80s by “Game Master Arino”, and the only way to return to the present is by playing through different challenges for each game. The top screen displays the game, while the bottom screen shows your character and your companion, a younger Arino, who encourages you while you play and discusses the various games in between play sessions. And to me, as great as this game is, that’s the touch that nails it for me. It’s almost as if one of my old junior high buddies is sitting next to me.

In addition, young Arino is a subscriber to GameFan Magazine. Every so often, a new magazine will be added to his collection and you’re free to go to his shelf and page through each issue. Inside you’ll find news on new games, tips and tricks, cheat codes, reviews, letter to the editor, and editorials. Each issue is around 10-15 pages, and with writers like “Johnny England”, “Milkman”, and “Dan Sock”, it’s not too difficult to figure out which recently closed-up magazine they’re paying tribute to.

Aside from entertainment value, GameFan contains vital tips to help you complete the challenges. If you’re finding a particular game to be a little too difficult, chances are there’s a tip or even an invincibility code somewhere in one of the issues.

I realize that this game is based on the Japanese TV show Game Center CX, and that’s probably a topic for another time. But as a child of the 80s, and one that dearly misses the youthful enthusiasm of the hobby, Retro Game Challenge is as close as I’ll get to time warping back to those days. Please do me a favor: check out their website and if you like what you see buy the game. Your inner child will thank you.
