Heliosphere-H8

One of our awesome readers/podcast listeners (and fellow Minnesotan I might add), FlashyAndy, is a member of a band called Heliosphere.

From their website Heliosphere.net:

“Heavily influenced by trance, industrial, and future-pop, Heliosphere continues to combine aggressive beats and club worthy synths to provide an always impressive, razor-sharp live performance.”

I thought I’d let you know that Heliosphere has put out their latest album, H8 and it’s available for download off of their website. They describe H8:

“Heliosphere’s latest release, “H8″, serves as the band’s most eclectic and diverse release yet. With tracks ranging from anthemic trance to digital hardcore to Heliosphere’s signature sound — as well as a trio of remixes — everyone is sure to have their own favorite song.”

Heliosphere has chosen to make their music available for free with the full knowledge that you fine folks will throw a donation their way should you like what you hear. So, go take a listen and then throw some monetary love to Heliosphere!

I understand your shock at reading this article’s headline. “Why on earth would anyone defend shitty bands like Fall Out Boy or Panic at the Disco? Aren’t they a huge part of what’s wrong with the music industry today?” Well, I’m not, and they are. But I’m not telling you why you shouldn’t hate them. Rather, I’m explaining to you why your conceptions of what “emo” music is are wrong.

Before I explain what emo music is, I’m going to explain to you what emo music is not. To today’s teen audience, the term “emo” simply describes music that is emotional. You may already see the problem with this; Nearly all music is inherently emotional, be it about losing a girlfriend, political stances, or even instrumental music. However, many people believe that if a band sings about a lost love, they are an emo band. Groups of vastly different genres (and talent pools) get lumped into this wide umbrella, including pop acts like Fall Out Boy, indie rock groups like Death Cab for Cutie, or prog rock bands like Coheed and Cambria. None of these bands play “emo” music.

So what is “emo” music? (more…)
