GI Joe

August 12th, 2009 by Hilden

Article By Ryker XL

Last Sunday, I met up with my good friends TiggerMango and Apoch and we headed off to see the summer blockbuster “GI Joe.” While admitted not as big a GI Joe nerd as Apoch, I fondly remember watching the cartoon when I was younger and owning maybe a few toys… Ok, so more than a few. Within the first thirty seconds of the reel we got the studio promos – you know, the iconic mountains for Paramount or the Fox searchlights. This one was new. It was a black sky with twinkling stars that formed into the word “Hasbro.” I looked at Apoch and laughed. A toy company officially had its own studio now. I knew at that moment what I was about to see: a loud, mindless romp purely designed to sell toys.

The story of GI Joe is quite simple. Weapons expert James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston, aka Dr Who) has created a nanotechnology-based weapon capable of destroying an entire city. His company, MARS, sells the warheads to NATO, and the U.S. Army is tasked with delivering them. Who will lead the convoy and deliver the warheads safely? Why our good friends Duke and Ripcord (Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayons). Of course, their convoy is attacked by the mysterious (and very hot) Barroness (Sienna Miller). All seems lost until (just as mysteriously) Duke and Ripcord are rescued by Snake Eyes, Heavy Duty, and the even hotter Scarlet (Rachel Nichols). The Joes escort Duke, Ripcord, and the warheads to a secret base in the Sahara Desert called “The Pit.” Here we meet General Hawk (played by the very old Dennis Quaid) and his top secret military organization, code named GI Joe. Duke informs the General that he knows the Baroness (quite intimately) and wants to become a Joe.

While Duke and Ripcord train at The Pit, McCullen and the Baroness discuss how to get the warheads back. Apparently McCullen is using the same nanotechnology to build an army of soldiers and create fear in the world. A plot is schemed and the Baroness, Storm Shadow, and Zartan burrow through the desert, attack The Pit, and steal the warheads. The chase is on as the Joes pursue the forces of Cobra around the globe in an attempt to retrieve the warheads and save the world. Oh, and hopefully sell a few toys while they are at it!

Walking Dead #61

PICK OF THE WEEK!

Just judging by the cover of this issue, you can tell that things are beginning to change for the characters in Walking Dead.

Flip open this issue and sure enough, things are changing, big time. At first, things seem optimistic, and sweet Jesus, this book needs optimism. The group come across an abandoned car that still functions, and even has some matresses inside, which in the zombie infested and constantly on the run world of the Walking Dead seems to be a luxury.

Two pages later, we see Rick going back to his old insane ways. Picking up the phone he carries around with him and hearing his dead wife’s voice say that they need to talk about their son, Carl. A page later, and Andrea is searching for the twins, Ben and Billy, only to find that one of them, Ben, is not so right in the head. After locking the boy away, the group argues about what needs to happen to the boy, for the sake of the rest of the group’s wellbeing. Also, a new character arrives that brings a eerie calm to the book. This newcomer, a preacher, claims to just walk across the country with only a Bible and God’s love to help him fend off evil. More noticeably, the group doesn’t encounter any zombies while the preacher is in their presence.

The most significant portion of the book deals with Rick and Abraham actually agreeing on something, but little do they realize, they are forming an impression on Rick’s son, Carl. So while the majority of the group agrees that something needs to be done about Ben, during the night, someone takes it upon themselves to correct the problem.

The last page gives away the upcoming plot that will soon be in full light. The group are being followed, but not by the dead.

Once again, Kirkman and Co. deliver an astounding issue of the Walking Dead. The last time something this horrific and depressing happened, it was back in issue 48, where many long time and much loved characters met their ends through various means. I’m gonna say that this issue, without killing off multiple characters, still manages to bring about the fact that absolutley NO ONE is safe in this book. Not even children.

Charlie Adlard again draws us a beautiful issue. It is just amazing how he can draw emotions for the characters. Little nuanced detail give this book the written AND visual feel that when both combined, give the reader the EXACT emotion that someone in the characters situation would have.

I really can’t stress this enough, YOU MUST BE READING WALKING DEAD! If you haven’t been, start from the beginning. It is paramount that you experience this series. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Walking Dead WILL go down as one of the greatest comic book series of all time when it finally ends. But in the meantime, with issues like these, I almost don’t want it to.

The Walking Dead # 59

Written by: Robert Kirkman

Art by: Charlie Adlard

Zombies? What are they good for? Absolutely nothing.

It’s been a strange ride in Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead”. I mean strange by the fact that most of the time, the real bad guys aren’t even dead. The zombies have mostly played second fiddle to the real flesh eating enemies; the living people around you. For the last 58 issues, Kirkman has solidfied this concept. But in issue 59, it is starting to change.

Accompanied by their new found friend and Rick’s former neighbor, Morgan, Rick and his son Carl along with the other newest member, Abraham, are on the road coming back from Morgan’s house, when they decide to go to the police station that Rick used to work at. Before going in to gather supplies, the group witness another side to Morgan. He is obviously on tilt and the group senses that he may be the next problem in a long line of problems. So, not only do they have to worry about being snacked on by zombies, but now they have to be careful around Morgan. We have already seen that he is little twisted in the past, being unable to kill his zombified kid and just letting him loose and all.

But the end of the book does bring up the next big shit storm. Abraham once spoke of a “herd” of zombies. A herd is basically a huge ass group of zombies that just roam around chomping on people. Well, it didn’t take long until we finally get to see one, and oh shit, is there a ton of them!

The herd is obviously going to be the next arc in the series, and it will bring the undead menace back into the forefront of the story. Obviously, some big things are gonna be a happenin’ soon.

As far as the writing and art goes. Stellar. And I really don’t need to elaborate. This is just one of those books that is always great and I can’t ever really think of anything bad about it.

I’m strangely disappointed by that fact…

GI Joe Movie Posters

January 28th, 2009 by Hilden

While were all hyped up on the 80′s this week, I though I’d make mention of this summer blockbuster I had completely forgotten about. GI Joe is being released this summer and by all accounts, it’s getting a fair treatment. I had kept up on this film as the initial casting was being done and as soon as I heard that Ray Park was playing Snake Eyes, I figured it was in the right hands and stopped worrying about it.

Well, the latest movie posters have been released online, and we’re supposedly getting a new movie trailer during the Super Bowl, so let’s hope it all goes well. At least the costumes look bad ass. I can’t wait to see Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow fight their epic battle over the Arashikage name. I hope it’s half as good as it has been in my mind for the past twenty years.

You can find the full set of posters over at Ain’t It Cool News, who continue to be the purveyors off all the news I care about. Go over there and check out the posters and let me know if you think the Baroness is finally hot. Anyone? Anyone?

Ok, I’ll just go play with my toys. Which I still have. No lie.
