Hey guys, I havn’t finished listening yet but the thing on drugs was hilarious, most people don’t know this but I myself used to partake in such activities and let’s just say I have more drug stories than drunk stories if you ever want to hear some of them

As a Holmes fan who actually read Doyle, I have to point out flaws in the drug use conversation. Holmes injected himself with a diluded cocaine mixture, he never did opium.

It was never explicitly stated that he used opium, but there were many opium references in the books. The one I can think of offhand is in “The Man with the Twisted Lip” where he goes undercover in an opium den. Beyond that, I think at some point Watson suspects Holmes has taken up opium, but I don’t know if that’s ever resolved.
Been reading that shit since I was a kid, yo.

John your arcade stick issue sounds like something that should be fixable. It sounds like something is restricting the sticks travel in the diagonal direction. Not totally sure what would be doing this but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say the restrictor gate might have got shifted from it’s normal position. With the bottom panel removed you should be able to see if something is stopping the sticks shaft from pressing both micro switches when you press in the problematic direction.

We’ve actually received a few entries since we put out this podcast. Hopefully we’ll have enough to end it next week.

With regards to what RPT said: You should be able to bend the microswitches slightly to get them into contact with the joystick after the right amount of movement. I had to do this with my X-Arcade back in the day and it worked fine after that.

John’s been bending his stick in every which direction, but he just can’t seem to get it to do anything!

Alright, thanks for the tips guys. Here’s what I found: I took the thing apart and discovered that pushing the right and up microswitches work fine individually, but don’t work when pushed simultaneously. I was using my fingers to push the microswitches and all the other diagonals work fine when pushed simultaneously (up/right, down/left, down/right). I know this because I was in SSFIV’s training mode and had it set to see the direction I was pushing on the screen. When I pushed the up/right together with my fingers, my character only jumps up and the directional indicator on the screen only registers up.
Any suggestions?
By the way, my stick is the Hori EX2 stick, in case that matters.

No familiarity with that stick in particular, but as a piece of electronics in general…
If you’re comfortable with doing it, you might try disconnecting and re-soldering the connections for those switches. You might also check the board they lead into for any kind of discoloration or whatever that might indicate a problem there. Take a look for a shitty / sloppy solder job or discoloration where the joystick inputs connect. You may be able to resolder or clean up those connections if they look bad.
If you really wanted to get into it, it might be interesting to find a wiring diagram and break out the old volt meter to see what’s happening when you move the stick. If the inputs work OK separately, but not together, maybe there’s problem with that I/O board (or whatever they happen to call it)… a short or grounding problem with the two inputs.
In that case, there is probably not much you can do but replace that board, which may be more trouble than it’s worth. If you can’t find one of those and you are feeling frisky, you could always try replacing it with the guts from a standard controller to make yourself a wireless stick… I wonder if that would work?
