For Your Listening Pleasure

If the Shmopera‘s not enough for you, here are a few good radio stations for you to stream on your computer while you work.

KCOU

KCOU is the college station from “Mizzou” (Missouri University in Columbia).  We’ve got a few connections to Mizzou, because this is not only where Moe spent some time, but Tiggermango was once a student and Mitch hosts a radio show called “The Misshap”. You can listen in by clicking here and hitting the “Play” button at the top of the page.

KEXP

If I can’t live in Seattle, I can at least try to enjoy some of the finer things the city has to offer via the internet. About ten years ago, I took a trip to Seattle. I got into my rental car, took the on ramp onto I-5 and flipped on the radio. I was greeted immediately by Pearl Jam’s “Insignificance” from KEXP. “This is a sign,” I thought. “I was meant to live here.”

Someday…maybe…though probably not…

Anyway, speaking of Pearl Jam, Stone Gossard has called KEXP the “greatest radio station in the world.” It’s hard to disagree with him. To listen, click here and select your choice of audio.

The CurrentThis is practically the ONLY station worth listening to in the Twin Cities. Seriously. Nearly every other station is absolute dreck. The Current is run by Minnesota Public Radio and features legendary local DJs from past Twin Cities’ radio stations. You know…before they all got bought out in the mid-90s and replaced by homogenized corporate crap.

The Current features not just the best in modern music, but also highlights great local bands via in-studio performances. If you think all the local music scene has to offer is GB Leighton, Boogie Wonderland, and other craptastic bands, The Current might change your mind.

To listen, click here and click the “Listen to the Stream” link in the center of the page.

KFAI

Here’s the other station worth listening to. KFAI is a completely different breed. They bill themselves as “Radio Without Boundaries”, an apt descriptor as you’ll hear music on KFAI that you’ll never hear anywhere else, and, like The Current, it’s all commercial-free. It’s a good thing they have a live stream because it seems their signal has about a three block radius.

So if you’re looking to broaden your horizons, click here and select one of the “Listen Now” options on the right.

Last, but not least…

Triple JTriple J is a GREAT station from Australia. I was introduced to Triple J about a decade ago by a friend of mine who worked with an Aussie or two. They swore by this station, and for good reason. Not only is the audio stream full of great music and wonderful Aussie personality, but the website has audio files from live, in-studio performances, as well as other great exclusives. I like to listen to Triple J and imagine Fluffy Nuts is listening too. You know…like we’re under the same big star.

To listen to Triple J live, click here and scroll to the middle of the page and hit the “listen now” button on the left.

And there you have it. Do you have any live stream recommendations? If so, post them in the comments section.

Haha, thanks for the plug! (Tuesdays at 10AM CST) When I moved to Columbia, I was overwhelmed by the amount of absolutely amazing stuff here, one of which was KCOU. Now that I’m actually on the staff, I’ve discovered an insane amount of new music that I never would have before. Seriously, my iTunes library has grown several GBs in the past few months.

KEXP is pretty great, and while I’ve never listened to Triple J live, I do know that they have a reputation of broadcasting live concerts, which is pretty amazing.

Another one I’ll recommend is Indie 103. Once the bastion of indie music across the nation, they willfully took themselves off the air last year so they wouldn’t become to commercial, instead broadcasting 24 hours a day online. They are great about breaking new music, and have some excellent non-music programming as well (Comedy Death Ray Radio, every Friday at 12 PST is a must-listen).
