After Hours 23: Xenophobia

Sigh.
John says I did a “pump fake” in regard to posting this latest After Hours. I have to sadly say that I agree with that statement. I was all full of piss and vinegar when the idea for this After Hours struck John and I after a phone call we shared. While we are, indeed, full of piss and vinegar in this episode, I held back out of fear that we may have come off as…..less than open minded.
After much thought, however, I have to say that at the very least, we tried our best to present a middle of the road perspective on a topic that seems to have NO middle ground these days.
As I state in the opening: BE WARNED. The topic that is the center of this week’s After Hours has the potential to piss you the fuck off. We talk about one of the things you’re just not supposed to discuss with other people you care about and that would be POLITICS. We realize we have some strong opinions on this show. We realize you may and probably WILL not share some or all of them. That’s fine.
See, the point is not to cram our political agenda down your throats. The point is to “vent our spleen” on the fact that our world is being run by fucking morons. On BOTH sides of the political aisle. Our cry is one of common sense. It’s a cry for decency in our elected officials and those that support them. It’s a rebel yell for folks to think and investigate before they open their mouths.
For that, I don’t feel the need to apologize because I believe that what is at the heart of this conversation is important. So much so that I’m willing to piss a few people off who may not be able to listen past the raised voices and passionate ideas expressed by three morons in an attic with audio gear.
So, I guess the only thing I’m willing to apologize for is the lack of funny and for waiting so long to post this episode of After Hours.
As always, LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK.
You’ve been warned.

Hey guys, just got done listening. To my surprise I wasnt offended near as much as what I thought I would be. I even thought it over for a while before I pushed the play button on my Ipod.
I totally agree your side of the “dont want my daughter learnin spanish” arguement. I work in an environment where there are a lot of different cultures. Yes, it is a pain in the ass when I have to deal with a somalian, mexican, or even german family. But language is not my concern, we have interpreters for that in my hospital (which gives jobs to bilingual americans), but it is how us tax payers pay for all of their fucking health care and everytime they have a baby they dont have to pay a dime. Thats what pisses me and most of my co-workers off, but that is a subject for another day.
Regardless, Politics are never going to be perfect. You are always going to have the ignorance of the people and the dishonesty of the reps. and moe, with this quote:
“cant remember what the past 8 years brought you, go ahead and vote”, it can be said that you sound about as off your damn rocker as conservatives who think obama is the anti-christ and is going to kill all the white mans first born. You know that you cannot blame one side when it comes to the economy or any major matter.
Have great weekend guys. We can always move to Australia.

Great show, thanks for posting it!
Sadly, I think that the reason Scott Brown, Jesse Ventura, and Sarah Palin get so much cred amonstthe people isn’t because of who they are or what they stand for, but rather what they stand against, each being a clearly ANTI-GOVT vote. Our Government has become a wasteland of corruption and not anything like the represntative government that our founding fathers wished to create. It’s so sad.
Whyen I was in high school I spent a week as a page for the Minnesota House of Represntatives. two great things happened to me that week. I met this really hot chick from another high school! (yes we dated) And I met a man named Jim Ramstad. Senator Ramstad preached about the importance of listening to your constiuents and he would often poll his district before he cast a vote. He was the Senator for the hot chick I liked, but that’s not the only reason I liked him. He later went on to sereve in Congress, but sadly left just last year. Maybe because he couldn’t get anything done over there…
As for the Turkey as the National Bird… Moe these are the FACTS behind that story!
In 1784 Benjamin Franklin was asked his opinion on the new US seal, which had a hand drawn Eagle on the front. It was so poorly drawn that Mr. Franklin said it looked more like a turkey. He later wrote in a letter to his daughter about the seal and compared the two birds. The letter said:
“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
“With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country . . .
“I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.”

Great After Hours guys. My issue with politics as they are right now is the tone. Anymore it all feels like a loud, mudslinging schoolyard fight with less and less discussion and/or listening from EITHER side. All shouting and accusations, no substance. I hate the feeling that very few of those in office are actually listening to the voters right now, but rather are taking their party label and trying to see who can wave it the highest.
Apoch just received an unsolicited letter in the mail from the local Republican caucus, and regardless of either of our voting tendencies, the language alone was enough for us to laugh at it and deem it worthless. Thus, when I hear similar ignorance and close-mindedness from those around me like John’s Facebook friend, it drives me crazy because all people are doing is following the example of those that are in “authority”. I can respect almost anyone’s political views or opinions as long as they’re civil, well-thought out, and have taken into account all sides, but the super-duper-angry yet uninformed thing seems to be more and more prevalent. *sigh* Hopefully some of this will turn around soon!
And to BenFromOhio…man, you always seem like you’re trying to pick a fight. To each their own opinion. If you don’t agree with Moe, that’s fine, but constantly trying to insultingly call him out in a comment box doesn’t achieve anything but make people like me lose respect for anything you might have to say. After all, it’s their show and you know where the unsubscribe button is. Just my two cents.
Lastly, Pants on the Ground.

I’m pissed at how un-pissed off I as was at you guys.
You need to kill a baby seal on air, that’s the only way I can forgive you. Hugs and kisses,
Z.

Tiggermango:
I am not trying to pick a fight. You said it yourself, to each their own opinion. This is a comment box, not an encouragement box.
I am not insulting Moe. Moe is a very well spoken person and I had a problem with that one thing that he said.
And for me to only have a problem with only one thing said in this After Hours episode says alot. I have a very conservative perspective, and for me to accept most of what is said is a big step for me in trying to get the foil antenna off of my head.
And yes, I know how to unsubscribe, but that is not something I am going to do because I love these guys and think they are hilarious; every new episode is a highlight of my week. Sounds cheesy but it is the truth.
Maybe we should call these the “two cents” reply boxes.

Ben: No big man, I think it’s more about the tone of comment. I think sometimes it may come off as being more aggressive than you mean. I know you’ve got a different perspective than them and that’s cool. Props to you for being willing to listen to the episode!

Hey thanks man. I have always said that it is a pain in the ass to communicate with people via text/writing. It is difficult to tell the tone, just like you said. I have gotten in many fights with my wife when she tries to text me at work because of this. If I could I would put a big yellow smiley or frown at the end of my sentences.
that looks gay though.

I was very pleased to find that I was in no way offended. I had a huge long winded dissertation of sorts about how Congress is a disaster, but I waffled and deleted it. It was nice to hear some intelligent banter on politics that wasn’t completely focused on Left or Right and right or wrong. Bottom line people need to be less ignorant. But then again that seemingly simple ideal would solve most of the worlds problems, so I’m not counting on it. Thanks guys!
