SHOCKtober! Sleepy Hollow
I may be crazy, but I fuckin’ love this movie. It’s a great little spooky flick that is well-acted, well-produced, and just a whole lot of fun.
I can take or leave Tim Burton. That guy makes some great movies, but he also puts out some dreadful shit (Planet of the Apes, anyone?). Fortunately, this is one of the good ones. In Sleepy Hollow we get the classic tale of the Headless Horseman told through Burton’s crooked vision. Instead of a being a teacher, Johnny Depp’s Ichabod Crane is a detective, sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate a handful of murders, all of them decapitations. The townsfolk are convinced that a headless ghost is behind the murders, but Crane is doubtful…until he sees the horseman with his own eyes.
Christina Ricci is thrown in there as the love interest, but the homicidal Hessian ghoul is the real star of the show here and there are some genuine frights in this movie. I love the vibe presented here and Depp is awesome as Ichabod Crane. For bonus points, pair this one up with another Depp flick From Hell for a great double feature.
