SHOCKtober! Hell Night
SHOCKtober continues with this corny teen movie from 1981. Starring The Exorcist‘s Linda Blair as a college pledge who, along with a handful of teenage stereotypes, must spend the night in a haunted house. The premise is that while this group of shmoes spends the night in the house, the mindless frat goons and sorority skanks will pull pranks on them in order to scare the living hell out of them. Unfortunately for all involved, the house is still occupied by a surviving member of a family massacre. This psycho bastard lives some place in the mansion and begins a campaign of terror on his own. Of course, the pledges think all the madness is being concocted by the frat/sorority knobs, which is a surprisingly effective plot device.
Hell Night isn’t a great film by any means, but as far as cheesy 80s teen horror flicks go, it’s shockingly watchable. The acting is terrible, and Linda Blair is as cold and stiff as the corpses around her. Nevertheless, the premise makes it more than worth your time. And as an aside, it’s also a worthwhile reminder that fraternities and sororities are fucking retarded.
