Greek Herbed Lamb with Rice

February 26th, 2009 by John

And now for something completely different…

My wife makes a lot of good food, but this is by far my favorite meal she makes. The best part is that it’s insanely easy to make, thanks to the faithful crock pot. What we usually do is prepare the ingredients before we go to bed, and then turn on the crock pot in the morning before we go to work. And in the evening, when we get home, the whole house smells fantastic. The recipe calls for lam shanks, but a lamb or beef roast works as well. I wanted to pass this along because it tastes fucking fantastic!

4 lamb shanks
1 cup white wine
1 tablespoon dried oregano, crushed
1 tablespoon dried mint, crushed
1 teaspoon green peppercorns, crushed
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup uncooked rice

Place the lamb shanks in a slow cooker with meaty ends down. In a small bowl, combine wine, oregano, mint, peppercorns, salt and garlic. Pour mixture over lamb. Cover and cook on LOW 7 to 9 hours or until meat is tender. Remove meat from bones, discard bones. Return meat to cooker. Turn control to HIGH. Add rice; cover and cook 1 hour.

It’s a fantastic meal on cold winter evenings and goes great with a nice dark beer or red wine. Enjoy!

Holy shit that sounds awesome, my mouth is watering. Have you tried replacing the rice with potatoes? I’ll bet that would be pretty good too! I think it’s time to borrow my parent’s crock pot.

No, I haven’t tried potatoes, but it could be good. The rice is fantastic with it, though.

We’ll have to give that one a try! My wife and I loosely alternate crock pot meal duties every week. One crock pot usually covers us for the work week. Next go around is my turn so thanks for the recipe!

To anyone else that likes to make ye old crock pot meals, our household has been utilizing the hundreds of recipes @ http://nikibone.com/recipe/crockpot.html

That’s quite a site phlegmer, thanks! I very much enjoy the stuff at this site. They have a table for the ingredients at the end of every recipe that just makes more sense to me in a visual way, and loads of pictures of stuff being put together.

John, here’s a vote for more cooking-oriented articles :-) I cook literally every day – it’s one of my favorite things to do, right up there with video games. You seem to be a pretty good chef as well!

I don’t know if I’m a “good chef”, but I do like to cook. I’ll try to post more in the future. In the meantime, if you guys have some recipes you’d like to share, just hit the “submissions” link and we’ll post ‘em.

Didn’t you go to Sushi University and get a Bachelor of Unagi degree or something?

  7. John Says:

Ha! No, but I did take sushi classes.

That’s awesome. I’m an amateur sushi chef myself – we even did it as a weekly thing, every Friday for almost a year until the expense just got too much. I’d do some crazy rolls sometimes with peaches or apples and brown rice. That’s the great thing about doing it yourself, you can make whatever you want.
