Broken Pixels: Season 2

February 9th, 2009 by Mitch

After the fallout from the recent 1UP.com firings, many fans found themselves unsure about the future of some of their favorite 1UP properties, including many of it’s podcasts. One of the more overlooked shows lost in the shuffle was Broken Pixels, the endlessly hilarious Mystery Science Theatre 3000-style show wherein editor Shane Bettenhausen, former EGM writer Crispin Boyer and EGM contributor Sean “Seanbaby” Riley played played a myriad of terrible games with the sole intent to mock them for our amusement. The first season ended last November, with the promise of a new season in January.

But before they could premiere the second season, Bettenhausen left the company in the wake of the UGO buyout, leaving none of the Broken Pixels hosts left at the company. Most fans assumed this to be the end of the show, but apparently  the trio managed to shoot some of the new season before the shakeup, and the fruits of their labor are now being released as Broken Pixels: Season 2. There’s no word on just how much they managed to film, but for a show that many fans believed to be dead, this is certainly a great development.

The new season premiered on Friday with a send-up of the full motion video Sega CD game Wirehead, embedded after the break.

I love Broken Pixels so I was really happy to see another episode posted. The episode where they made fun of Queen of Queens was my favorite.

Sad to say, I never really paid much attention to Broken Pixels, but I think the idea is pretty damn cool.

They should really have scripted it beforehand, like MST3K or Cinematic Titanic do as there were a lot of funny lines that could have been added in there. Especially since this game is just a really bad movie at it’s heart.

Honestly, I really prefer the off-the-cuff nature of Broken Pixels to MST3K. While the MST3K style may seem like it would work when watching this episode, the nature of video games is such that it isn’t the same experience every time. Plus, if you watch through older episodes, I think you’ll find that a lot of the humor is in the guys discovering how bad the game is as they go. Like Skreesha mentioned, the “Queen of Queens” episode is an absolute classic. Plus, check out the episode where they did “Lifeline”. That one was absolutely hysterical, and it was mostly because of how frustrated they got when playing the game.

I would also recommend the Bible Adventures episode.

Well I hope the show has a few more episodes as I honostly thought the Wirehead one was the funniest one i’ve seen yet. That game is batshit crazy.
