Drunken Gamers Radio: 11.23.2008

Once again, we’ve got zombies at the core of our show. Maybe we should start getting worried about our state of minds. But with Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ and Left 4 Dead, shooting the undead is far too much fun to stop. We also cover Tomb Raider: Underworld, the Moe Minute Returns and the news on this week’s show!

Listened to this week’s show…
There certainly are a lot of games on consoles nowadays that are primarily focused on online multiplayer. I suspect I’m the only person on this site who feels this way, but I don’t enjoy online multiplayer games at all. Either they’re competitive, or they’re cooperative– if the former, I no longer have enough time to play until I’m as good as anyone else, so I always lose; and if the latter, I no longer have enough time to play until I’m as good as anyone else, so I’m always a hindrance to the team, and I end up leaving after a round or two so that I don’t continue to ruin anyone’s fun. In either case, the only thing online games ever do for me is to make me feel like shit.
Sometimes I wonder if this is how Joe Consumer feels. Let’s say Joe Consumer only has 15 minutes a day to spend on games, with many days where those 15 minutes have to be spent on something not related to gaming. When Joe does get to play a game, if he wants to play online, he’s probably going to have to pick one game and stick with that game, forever. That way, even if a new version of the game comes out, he still knows the levels, knows the weapons, knows the tactics that he needs to succeed… People occasionally ask me why the Halo series is still so popular, and I often have a laundry list of reasons I give; but I guess this is one of them: The folks who played Halo in college have jobs and families now, and don’t have enough time to get good at another type of game, so this is all they play.
I suspect the same thing is going to happen to me soon, except it’ll be Rock Band instead of Halo.

I’m pretty much in the same boat as you, MC. I think what drives me to drool about L4D is the fact that it’s just so well-designed and easy to jump into. I can play a few rounds and not worry about skill or whatever, because it’s not really a Halo/COD4 type game where you’re scoring points or doing death match.
It also doesn’t hurt that I’m obsessed with zombies.

I think where Left 4 Dead succeeds in that I don’t feel like I need to be especially good in order to play. It not really about scoring points as much as it is survival. As long as you can shoot a gun and point it in the general direction of the zombie horde, you are an asset to the team and doing well in the game.
The object is to make it to Point B and not die. Rather than learn the “map” and figure out tactics or how to master melee combat so some douche doesn’t kick your ass or yell at you for not scoring in a round, this one just lets you freak out, shoot things and move on with very little penalty.

Well, that’s what spurred my thoughts in this direction: your comments on this episode about Left 4 Dead and why it appealed to you. After listening to that, I’d like to give the game a shot, but unfortunately the demo has been removed from Live. Carrotpanic was trying to get me to play it before the demo was taken down– guess I should’ve followed his advice sooner.

Great episode, guys. Between your show and your listeners’ advice via Twitter, I’ll be picking up L4D soon.

Left4Dead is amazing and everyone should play it but I would say if you don’t have friends to play with online then leave it alone or just rent it to see if you’re into it. The douchebag quotient on XBox Live can really make a good game go bad especially because friendly fire is enabled.
Great show guys your podcast makes my shitty work days go by so much faster, keep it up.

To echo what they already said, L4D is so different than any other online FPS I barely consider it one. Unless you get co-oped with some random douchey people, you should have fun no matter what your skill level.
I agree with the thoughts on competitive multiplayer games too. I grew up playing games solo so I’ve never had much appeal in multiplayer gaming to begin with, but they’ve really been turning me off lately thanks to the time-sink required to get good. There are exceptions, but I tend to get distracted by some other shiny object before I bother improving past novice skill levels.
@John & Hilden: You guys should really rent CoD: World at War and check out the Nazi Zombie mode. It’s incredibly awesome and set up completely different from L4D. If it had more than 1 map, I’d actually buy the game just for it.

I’m gonna get L4D for Christmas based on the review you guys gave. Sounds like a awesome game to try on PC

Does Moe start all of his Child Porn Hotline calles with “Dear Child Porn Hotline, I never thought this would happen to me…”?

Yes. Yes he does.

I also forgot to mention that Night of the Comet is a zombie movie that takes place in a mall. At least part of the movie, anyway.

I do not advise eating out of season honeydew.

Sigh,
Hopefully you all will still be enjoying it by then as I so want to frag some Zombies!
Been instructed by beloved not to buy L4D as Santa may bring it.

Re: Moe Minute
Bill Bailey did a sketch once that started: ‘Three men went into a pub, Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit…’ so this is clear proof of the trinity’s influence on pub gags
